Holy Dham Etiquette
The ISKCON Mayapur campus is a fully sanctified area with a spiritual atmosphere, and visitors are expected to maintain its decorum. Please adhere to the following guidelines:
What to do
- Bow to your Ishta deva before going on a pilgrimage to Shridham Mayapur.
- Book your tickets and accommodation at Shridham Mayapur in advance.
- Take ablution and put on clean clothes before entering the sanctum sanctorum of the Lord, the Shri Chandrodaya Mandir temple.
- Inside the temple, concentrate on Lord Sri Nrsimhadev, Sri Sri Radha Madhava and Sri Sri Pancha-Tattva.
- Do not carry on conversations in the temple and chant “Hare Krishna” inside the temple.
- Bathe in the Ganga.
- Respect the ancient Gaudiya Vaishnava customs and rules while in Shridham Mayapur.
- Respect and encourage the religious sentiments of your fellow citizens.
- Drop your offerings only in the hundi, the special donation boxes.
- Wear tilak according to your religious affiliation.
- To enter the temple, women must be dressed in saris and men in dhotis/lungis.
- Follow the order established in the temple and wait for your turn for the Lord’s darshan.
- Come to Shridham Mayapur for the purpose of paying your respects to the Lord.
What not to do
- Do not carry a lot of jewellery and cash.
- Do not approach vendors for accommodation.
- Do not throw away the prasadam and charanamrita that you have been given at the temple.
- Do not eat non-vegetarian food.
- Do not consume alcoholic beverages or other intoxicants.
- Do not smoke while in Shridham Mayapur.
- Don’t listen to mundane music in the Sridham Mayapur area.
- Do not wear any headgear such as helmets, caps, and hats on the temple premises.
- Women are not advised to wear jeans or short skirts.
- Do not commit any act of violence or rudeness on the temple premises.
- Do not enter the temple if custom or custom forbids you to enter.
- Do not encourage beggars.
- Do not spit or create a nuisance on the temple grounds.
- Carrying arms and ammunition into Shridham Mayapur is prohibited, and pilgrims with licensed arms/ammunition must declare the same to the head security office and submit all relevant documents, and failure to do so will result in legal action.
